Meandering silver-quartzite paths, hand-selected boulders, queen palms, and waterfalls… These are a few of the elements of style that make up some of Tamate Landscaping’s most ingenious projects involving his custom stonework and design working with boulders and stones.
For one project, Paul Tamate met with a client at a local quarry to select the rocks for the project so they could look to create an Asian-inspired space that married design with nature. The final design is anchored by a dry creek, a languid silver-quartzite patio and path, and five tons of boulders.
For another distinctive project, the client’s four dogs were the main influence on design and functionality. For this project, the client’s wish list included grass that would discourage digging by the dogs, a waterfall safe enough for a three-year-old to play around, a gas fire pit, grill, queen palms – and a 900-pound boulder.
Paul chooses each boulder, type of stone, and paving stone to fit the design and aesthetic. From boulders to pea gravel, he ensures every part is a beautiful addition and support to the whole.
The joy that Paul derives from working with native plants, wood, rocks and stones, and water features and creating one-of-a-kind exteriors is apparent in the many testimonials of his satisfied clients.
Also evident is the pride of ownership that goes into his work, an ethic of personal attention to every detail that Paul learned from working with his father, also a landscape gardener, from the age of 10. The range of Tamate Landscaping projects varies from the simple and elegant, to the intricate and complex and draws from over 25 years of working with the realities of San Francisco spaces.
As one client expressed it, “He has a distinctive capability when it comes to Asian influenced design, and manages to source and move some incredible rocks for his gardens (mine included a 900 lb boulder). Paul was accessible, responsive, and on-site every day of the project. I recommend him highly, without reservation, and if you’re interested in rock gardens, water features, or Japanese-style garden design, you shouldn’t look anywhere else.”
