This project in West Portal began with an unusable, sloped backyard. We came up with a design where three terraces were created thereby leveling out each area. That entailed the removal of 40 cubic yards of soil and debris, carving out terraces, and erecting concrete retaining walls to retain each area. As is so popular these days in San Francisco, we elected a contemporary design using clean lines and geometric shapes.
We incorporated man-made materials such as hand-troweled concrete walls and TREX decking/benches with natural limestone and stone veneers. The project also includes covering the old concrete retaining wall with rock, a stainless waterfall weir with a basin, a gas fire pit, remotely operated lighting, redwood horizontal fences, and of course planting and irrigation.
